Some of my Dream SNL Hosts

People I would like to see host Saturday Night Live

Saturday Night Live is beginning another season and has called on Tina Fey, Miley Cyrus, and Bruce Willis to start off the hosting carousal.  The first choice is solid but expected, the second is iffy but expected, and the third is just surprising.  Here’s who I would like to see host the late night institution.

1)      Will Arnett – He knows how to work with great ensembles and already is an expert scene stealer.  He would be the host that seamlessly fits in with the cast and elevates any sketch he appears in.  Plus, he would kill in any arrogant man roles.

2)      Bob Dylan – This is just because I think it would be one of the most bizarre shows they have ever done.  The thrill of watching Bob Dylan on SNL would never lose any luster.  As a huge Dylan fan, I would love to see and analyze how he is able to fit in and perform the sketches.  Will his monologue be coherent?  Will he flub his lines?  Will Dylanology ever be the same again?

3)      Eddie Murphy – When most cast members return to host their first shows, the episode proceeds like a victory lap, in which the cast member rehashes all their greatest hits.  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.  With Eddie Murphy it would not only work, but be amazing to see which sketches he brings back (if better be Gumby, dammit).  His monologue would most likely be the best one the show has had in a long time.

4)      Jessica Walter – She could give a deliciously villainous edge to some sketches and would be funnier than most hosts if she only did her Lucille looks for an hour and a half.  Maybe, she’d bring on Jeffrey Tambor for a scene or two.

5)      Woody Allen – A Woody Allen hosted SNL would produce a very different show than viewers are accustomed to.  The humor would be more cerebral and if his monologue is anything like the one he gave at the Oscars in 2002, would be an instant classic.  My biggest interest in a Woody Allen hosted SNL is whether the show would be able to elevate itself to his legendary status.  How would the writers write with and for one of the most influential people in the comedy world?

6)      J.R. Smith – He is one of the most fascinating characters both on and off of the basketball court.  I would love to see a million sketches based on him saying “get the pipe”, partying with Rihanna, and all his other antics.  He is just amazing.

7)      Kaitlin Olson – Like Will Arnett, she knows how to steal scenes and shine amongst great comedic actors.  She is an amazing physical actress and should get more recognition for having one of the best characters on television.

8)      Garry Shandling – The world needs to remember the comic genius that created It’s Garry Shandling’s Show and The Larry Sanders Show.  Plus, it’s always great to see a comedian do the SNL monologue.  Perhaps he can bring some of his 4th wall breaking humor to studio 8H.

9)      Mel Brooks – Just his mere presence brings light, energy, and an infinite amount of laughter into a room.  He would bring some much needed borsht belt humor to the SNL and like with Woody Allen, it would be interesting to see how the writers deal with a comedy legend.

10)   Debbie Harry – One of the coolest New Yorkers, she is a naturally funny lady, and could bring back some of that 70’s magic to SNL.  She was a musical act on the show before, but who cares, this is my list.
